Introduction

Welcome to Scriptybooks! SCRIPTYBOOKS LLC (“we”, “us”, “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our website and services (collectively, the “Service”).

This policy is written to be compliant with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for our users in the European Union.

For the purpose of GDPR, SCRIPTYBOOKS LLC is the data controller. We are a company registered in Utah, USA.

1. What Data We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

a) Personal Data You Provide to Us:

  • Account Information: When you register for an account, we collect your email address and a hashed version of your password. You may optionally provide your first and last name in your profile settings.
  • Payment Information: When you make a purchase, you provide payment information directly to our third-party payment processor (Stripe). We do not collect or store your full credit card information ourselves.

b) Data We Collect Automatically:

  • Usage and Learning Data: We automatically collect data about your learning progress and interactions with the player. This includes your current position in a story, playback speed, and detailed interaction data, such as when you start and stop listening or which parts of a story you repeat. This information is vital for helping us improve our content, stories, and the overall learning experience. This data is tied to your user ID to sync your progress across devices.
  • Technical Data: We collect technical information about your device, such as your IP address, browser type, and operating system for security purposes and to optimize our service.

2. How We Use Your Data

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • To Provide and Maintain the Service: To create your account, process your purchases, and save and synchronize your learning progress.
  • To Process Payments: To facilitate transactions for content you purchase via our secure third-party payment processors.
  • For Security: To protect the Service from fraud and abuse, such as by identifying and blocking malicious IP addresses.
  • To Communicate with You: To send you transactional emails regarding your account or purchases. Marketing communications will only be sent with your explicit consent.
  • To Improve Our Service: To understand how our users interact with the Service so we can improve it. All such data is used in an aggregated and anonymized form.

3. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)

Under GDPR, we process your data based on the following legal grounds:

  • Performance of a Contract: We process your account and usage data because it is necessary for the performance of the contract (our Terms of Service) you enter into with us when you use our Service.
  • Legitimate Interests: We process technical data for security purposes based on our legitimate interest in protecting our Service.
  • Consent: For non-essential uses, such as marketing emails or certain types of cookies, we will rely on your explicit consent.

4. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We do not sell your personal data. We only share your data with the following categories of third-party service providers (sub-processors) who help us operate our business:

  • Payment Processors: Stripe to securely handle payments.
  • Cloud Hosting Providers: Google Cloud Platform (Firebase) to host our website, database, and your data.
  • Analytics Services: Firebase Analytics (first-party, Google) to help us understand service usage. Only active if you consent to analytics cookies.

These third parties are contractually obligated to protect your data and are prohibited from using it for any other purpose.

5. International Data Transfers

SCRIPTYBOOKS LLC is based in the United States. However, to best serve our European users, our primary data storage is located within the European Union (Google Cloud Platform, region `europe-west1` in Belgium).

When it is necessary to transfer data to our third-party service providers in the US (such as Google or Stripe), we do so using legally-approved data transfer mechanisms, such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs), which ensure your data is protected to a standard equivalent to that of the GDPR.

6. Data Retention and Account Deletion

We will retain your personal data, such as your account information and learning progress, for as long as your account is active.

Account Deletion: You can delete your account at any time through your account settings. When you delete your account:

  • Your personal data (email, name, profile information) is permanently deleted
  • Your purchase records and learning progress are permanently deleted
  • Your Firebase Authentication account is permanently removed
  • This action cannot be undone

Some data may be retained for a limited period if required by law (for example, for tax or accounting purposes, typically 7 years for financial records).
